Between Two Maples

from In The Great Outdoors by Allen Bruce Ray

/

about

The original improvisation that this is derived from was performed on a Laughing Crow D minor drone flute in bird's eye maple and cedar. For this release, I chose to play a PYNTech D minor drone flute that was gifted to me by a lovely Iranian fellow named Reza Haghighi Osgouei, a tech-savvy flute maker/doctoral student of engineering in the U.K. This and all of his other flutes are actually 3-D printed using an environmentally-safe biodegradable thermoplastic. Like all of his instruments, this flute is in two pieces that easily slide together, making it extremely easy to carry around with me wherever I go. The quality of the workmanship, the intonation, and the flute's tone are all exceptional, so I could not resist using it for this song (despite having a title relating to maple trees). I'm quite impressed with how this flute performs!

Percussion on this one is accomplished with an 18-inch Featherridge frame drum and a Peruvian rattle. This was played at 161 bpm in 4/4 time.
