Hope in My Hands

from In The Great Outdoors by Allen Bruce Ray

about

This is the only track on the album that was a new improvisation. What you hear is in fact directly from the original take, edited down from around 6 minutes. This is played at 120 bpm in 4/4 time.

Percussion in real-time is handled by a 13-inch frame drum, a Peruvian rattle, and a Kokopelli shaker. Samples include a bodhran, taiko drum, more shakers, a rainstick, a bell tree, and some frame drum one-shots.

The Western aromatic cedar flute in E minor used here is one that I had a direct hand in crafting back in 2009. Richard Maynard, a.k.a. Laughing Crow, let me use two of his pre-cut Western red cedar flute blanks (the unshaped top and bottom halves of a flute), and I set to work carving the bore with a chisel, cutting the critical windway portion, and shaping the flute body with a wood rasp and varying grits of sandpaper. After I glued the top and bottom halves together, Richard
drilled the finger holes, did the tuning, added one of his signature Laughing Crow blocks, and then later sprayed several coats of clear polyurethane over the whole thing - in short, most of the critical stuff! Still, it's truly a 50/50 flute in terms of who made what. I like its earthy tone and simple but sleek look!
